Bitwise’s chief investment officer, Matt Hougan, outlined a framework in which Bitcoin benefits across a wide range of artificial-intelligence-related macro scenarios. Whether AI spurs unprecedented productivity or triggers a market collapse, his analysis concludes the cryptocurrency is likely to appreciate.

Diverging Economic Paths

Hougan likened the current macro environment to a branching storybook, where distinct choices still converge on a similar ending. He identified three primary trajectories: a rapid AI-driven expansion, a sharp downturn resembling the 2008 financial crisis, and a steady-state growth environment with modest inflation.

AI-Powered Prosperity

If AI unleashes a wave of efficiency that dramatically raises global output, Hougan expects capital to gravitate toward assets that cannot be duplicated. In his view, scarcity-based stores of value—such as coastal real estate, precious metals, and Bitcoin—will attract inflows as investors seek protection against limitless digital replication.

A Bust Followed by Massive Liquidity

Conversely, should the AI sector overheat and collapse, initial sell-offs would likely pull Bitcoin down alongside other risk assets. However, Hougan argues that the scale of AI infrastructure spending would compel governments to intervene, flooding the market with money. He estimates the probability of such a bailout at “nearly 100%,” creating an environment that aligns with Bitcoin’s original purpose as a hedge against monetary expansion.

Steady-State Growth and Ongoing Adoption

In a scenario where the economy experiences low-single-digit growth and interest rates hover around 4%, Bitcoin would continue its existing trajectory. Hougan points to the steady influx of exchange-traded fund (ETF) capital, growing institutional advisory interest, and increasing corporate and sovereign balance-sheet allocations as evidence that the digital asset can thrive even without dramatic macro shocks.

Risks Beyond the Macro Lens

While emphasizing the macro-agnostic upside, Hougan also highlighted potential non-macro threats. He cited the possibility of a coordinated global regulatory crackdown and the emerging risk that advances in quantum computing could eventually compromise existing cryptographic safeguards. These factors, he noted, could disrupt the positive outlook despite favorable macro conditions.

Why it matters

Hougan’s perspective suggests that Bitcoin’s role as a scarce, digital store of value may become more pronounced regardless of how AI reshapes the economy. For long-term investors, the analysis implies that macro volatility may be less decisive than the underlying scarcity narrative, while also reminding market participants to monitor regulatory developments and technological vulnerabilities that could alter the risk landscape.
