The XRP Ledger’s much-anticipated Batch upgrade has been delayed by at least ten days, with the earliest activation now projected for Oct. 9, 2026, after validator support briefly fell below the required threshold.

Validator support and new timeline

Upgrades on the XRP Ledger must retain backing from more than 80% of the network’s 35 trusted validators for two consecutive weeks. A dip in that support on Sept. 23 caused the countdown for the Batch upgrade—formally BatchV1_1—to reset. Support was regained on Sept. 25 when 30 of the 35 validators voted in favor, restarting the two-week window. Assuming the backing holds, the upgrade could activate on Oct. 9 at approximately 14:46 UTC.

A separate improvement, PermissionDelegationV1_1, which lets account owners delegate specific tasks without exposing signing keys, experienced a similar setback. After losing qualifying support on Sept. 23, it recovered a day later, moving its earliest possible launch to Oct. 8 at 21:25 UTC.

What the Batch upgrade brings

BatchV1_1 allows users to bundle up to eight transactions into a single submission. An all-or-nothing mode enables a buyer to pay for a tokenized asset and receive it in one atomic operation, eliminating the risk of one side completing while the other does not. This capability is expected to streamline complex asset transfers and could support new decentralized finance workflows on the ledger.

The feature is part of a second attempt to introduce batching; the initial version was withdrawn after a critical signature-checking flaw was discovered. The corrected code was released in August as part of software version 3.3.0.

Anticipated ecosystem impact

RippleX’s head of engineering has indicated that several projects are already being designed with Batch in mind, though specific partners and launch dates have not been disclosed. The delayed activation may shift development timelines for those initiatives but also provides additional time for testing and integration.

Permission delegation, the companion upgrade, aims to let businesses assign operational duties—such as payment processing or compliance checks—to separate accounts without sharing private keys. This could enhance security for token issuers and other institutional users.

Why it matters

The postponement underscores the importance of validator consensus in maintaining network stability and security. By ensuring that upgrades only proceed with sustained majority support, the XRP Ledger mitigates the risk of premature feature releases that could expose vulnerabilities. The Batch and Permission Delegation upgrades together promise to broaden the ledger’s functionality for high-value, institutional use cases, potentially increasing its competitiveness in the broader blockchain ecosystem.
