A recent Visa questionnaire of 14,250 participants across the Asia-Pacific region revealed a sharp rise in interest toward fiat-backed cryptocurrencies. Nearly half of respondents indicated they would consider using stablecoins for daily spending, travel expenses, and international money moves within the next half-decade. This marks a jump from the 16% who reported any usage in the preceding twelve months.
Consumer Knowledge Gap
Despite growing curiosity, comprehension of stablecoin mechanics remains limited. Just 6% of those surveyed demonstrated an accurate grasp of how these tokens retain a stable value. Misconceptions persist; almost one-half of respondents believe stablecoins serve only as a gateway to buying or selling other digital assets. Among the aware yet hesitant cohort, fear of fraud and scams topped the list of obstacles.
Drivers Behind the Shift
The survey points to several factors fueling the budding demand. Asia-Pacific already leads global stablecoin transaction volume and on-chain activity, providing a fertile ground for broader adoption. Moreover, the region’s expanding middle class—estimated at 2.5 billion people—creates a sizable market for seamless, low-cost cross-border payments.
Industry Response
Payment networks, banks, and stablecoin issuers are positioning themselves to capture this opportunity. Visa has broadened its settlement infrastructure to accommodate a wider array of tokens and blockchain platforms. Its partner, Reap, is preparing local-currency stablecoins—potentially including Hong Kong dollar, Korean won, and Japanese yen—to enable 24/7 foreign-exchange settlement. Executives emphasize the need to translate consumer curiosity into reliable, familiar payment experiences that can scale.
Potential Use Cases
Respondents highlighted three primary scenarios where stablecoins could add value:
- Everyday purchases – using tokens at retail points of sale.
- Travel spending – paying for services abroad without currency conversion delays.
- Cross-border transfers – moving funds quickly and cheaply between countries.
Competitive Landscape
The race to embed stablecoins into mainstream finance pits traditional card networks against emerging crypto-focused platforms. As providers seek to differentiate, the ability to offer secure, fraud-resistant solutions will likely determine market share in the region.
Why it matters
The findings suggest that a sizable portion of the Asia-Pacific consumer base is poised to integrate stablecoins into routine financial activities within the next five years. However, the stark knowledge deficit and lingering security concerns indicate that education and trust-building will be critical for the sector’s growth. Payment firms that can bridge the gap between curiosity and confidence may secure a dominant role in the next phase of digital money adoption.
