The Sui blockchain reported a total value locked (TVL) of approximately $1.21 billion in the validation snapshot taken on September 22. This marks a clear step up from the $1 billion range the network hovered around earlier in the week, indicating that its DeFi ecosystem is accumulating more capital.
NAVI Protocol as a Core Liquidity Provider
Among the protocols operating on Sui, NAVI Protocol stands out, accounting for more than $420 million of the total deposits. This makes the lending platform one of the largest single contributors to the network’s DeFi base, underscoring its importance for overall liquidity.
Price Movements Influence TVL Figures
TVL is expressed in dollar terms, meaning that token price fluctuations can inflate the metric without any new capital entering the system. The rise from roughly $1 billion to $1.21 billion therefore does not necessarily represent $210 million of fresh deposits; part of the increase can be attributed to appreciation in the price of SUI and other assets held on the chain.
Diversification and Concentration Risks
While the headline figure suggests robust capital depth, the concentration of assets in a few protocols—particularly NAVI—poses a systemic risk. A healthy DeFi environment requires a broader distribution of funds across lending, trading, and liquidity-providing services. If incentives shift or market conditions change, capital could quickly migrate away from heavily weighted protocols.
Growing DEX and Lending Activity
The network’s decentralized exchange (DEX) and lending operations have expanded alongside TVL, helping to convert the locked value into usable liquidity rather than idle capital. This activity indicates that the ecosystem is not merely hoarding assets but is facilitating active financial services.
Looking Ahead: Sustainability of Liquidity
The next challenge for Sui is to demonstrate that its TVL growth persists after stripping out the effects of token price appreciation. Monitoring borrowing demand, stablecoin depth, and the health of individual protocols will provide clearer insight into whether the ecosystem is building durable liquidity or simply benefitting from a bullish token market.
Why it matters
Crossing the $1.2 billion TVL mark places Sui in a higher capital tier, attracting attention from developers, investors, and users seeking robust DeFi infrastructure. However, the reliance on a single protocol for a large share of that liquidity highlights the need for diversification. Sustainable growth will depend on continued expansion of DEX, lending, and other services, as well as the ability to retain capital during periods of price volatility.
