Starknet, the Ethereum layer-2 solution, has introduced a privacy tool that decouples a user’s DeFi actions from their primary wallet address. The system, called Shadow Accounts, creates dedicated on-chain identities for each application, allowing activity to be conducted without publicly revealing the source wallet.

Feature Overview

The Shadow Accounts mechanism assigns a unique address to every decentralized finance protocol a user interacts with. Users first deposit assets into a privacy-focused pool, known as the STRK20 shielded balance, and then allocate funds to the newly created address. While the balance and transaction data of the Shadow Account remain on the blockchain, the connection to the original funding wallet is concealed.

Technical Implementation

StarkWare, the team behind Starknet, built the feature on top of its existing STRK20 privacy framework, which already supports private token transfers. When a user opts for private mode, the wallet interface switches to the Shadow Account, and the deposited assets are held in a vault. The vault holds the position until the user decides to move the assets back into the shielded pool.

Potential Applications

Initially integrated with vault-style contracts, the privacy layer could later be applied to a broader set of DeFi functionalities, including providing liquidity, borrowing, staking, trading derivatives, participating in prediction markets, and even transacting on NFT platforms. By separating identities per protocol, users gain flexibility to manage multiple private positions simultaneously.

Why it matters

The introduction of Shadow Accounts represents a significant step toward enhanced privacy for Ethereum-based DeFi participants. By obscuring the link between a user’s main address and their activity across multiple protocols, the feature addresses growing concerns over on-chain traceability while preserving the transparency of balances and positions. This balance between privacy and openness could encourage broader adoption of privacy-preserving tools in the broader Ethereum ecosystem.
