St. Cloud Financial Credit Union, a member-owned institution originally founded by postal workers in 1930, has become the first credit union to place Bitcoin on its core ledger, offering members direct ownership via a novel hybrid custody framework.

Hybrid Custody Model

The credit union’s approach combines a multisignature vault with individual member keys, allowing each account holder to retain a unique slice of Bitcoin while the institution maintains overall control of the vault. The design is described as patent-pending and is intended to balance the security of institutional custody with the transparency of personal ownership. Members can buy or sell Bitcoin directly through the credit union, eliminating the need for external exchanges.

Growth and Assets Under Custody

Since launching the service, the organization has accumulated more than 20 BTC in member vaults without actively seeking to expand its holdings. The Bitcoin is stored in a Lightning-compatible environment, enabling faster transactions and the potential for low-cost payments. The credit union also introduced a “Cloud Dollar” stablecoin, built on a cooperative ownership model that links the digital asset to the broader membership base.

Regulatory Landscape

St. Cloud’s initiative complies with Minnesota custody statutes and has undergone examinations by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). The credit union references the CLARITY Act as a guiding framework for digital-asset custody, ensuring that the hybrid model meets existing financial-services regulations while positioning the institution to adapt to future policy developments.

Member Education and Adoption

CEO Jed Meyer emphasizes the importance of educating members who may be skeptical of digital currencies. The credit union conducts workshops and provides resources that explain how the hybrid custody works, the benefits of owning Bitcoin directly, and the role of the credit union in safeguarding the assets. This outreach is aimed at bringing “Main Street” users into the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Why it matters

By integrating Bitcoin into its core ledger, St. Cloud Financial Credit Union demonstrates how traditional financial cooperatives can adopt crypto assets without sacrificing regulatory compliance or member protection. The hybrid custody model offers a blueprint for other credit unions and community banks seeking to provide crypto services, potentially widening retail access to decentralized money and prompting further regulatory clarity.
