Bitwise’s latest quarterly review describes the third quarter as one of the strongest periods in recent crypto history. The firm’s large-cap crypto index posted a 46.4% gain for the three-month span, while U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds attracted roughly $6 billion in new capital, turning year-to-date net flows back into positive territory.
Bitcoin itself appreciated 42.3% during the quarter. Ether and Solana posted even larger jumps, rising 69.1% and 59.2% respectively. All ten assets that compose the index recorded double-digit quarterly gains, with Chainlink leading the pack at a 97.6% increase.
Expanding tokenization and on-chain activity
Beyond price moves, the market for tokenized equities surged 65.5%, reaching close to $3.2 billion in value. Decentralized perpetual futures also set a new high, with open interest climbing to about $26 billion. A growing portion of this activity is linked to traditional assets such as stocks, commodities, foreign-exchange products and pre-IPO shares.
These trends align with Bitwise’s view that the market is entering a “crypto spring,” as on-chain metrics and institutional inflows point upward. Analysts at CryptoQuant have similarly noted that technical and on-chain indicators now support a new Bitcoin bull market, though some commentators caution that additional confirmation may be required.
Divergent sector performance
The rally did not benefit every segment uniformly. Shares of major Bitcoin miners, including Riot Platforms and Hut 8, slipped 26.4% and 25.4% respectively, while Galaxy Digital fell 16.8% over the same period. The count of public companies holding Bitcoin dropped nearly 6% to 173, although their combined holdings rose modestly by 0.5%. Ether-holding companies fell from 40 to 35, yet their aggregate Ether balances increased.
Despite the quarterly surge, the large-cap index remains 6.2% below its start-of-year level, reflecting the lingering impact of the previous market downturn.
Upcoming catalysts
Looking ahead, Bitwise anticipates that the SEC’s forthcoming innovation exemption will move tokenized assets from experimental pilots to broader production use. The firm expects this regulatory change to draw billions of dollars of tokenized securities onto blockchains such as Ethereum, Solana and NEAR.
The perpetual futures market is also projected to accelerate. Over $6 trillion in perpetual contracts have been traded year-to-date across platforms like Hyperliquid and Lighter, marking a 42% increase from the prior year. Bitwise predicts that, with regulatory clarity, U.S. investors will further expand participation in this segment.
Why it matters
The Q3 data suggest a renewed appetite for crypto exposure among both retail and institutional participants, highlighted by robust ETF inflows and growing on-chain activity. At the same time, the uneven performance across mining equities and corporate holdings underscores the sector’s ongoing fragmentation. If the SEC’s innovation exemption materializes as expected, tokenized assets could see a significant migration onto leading blockchains, potentially reshaping capital flows and broadening the ecosystem’s utility.
