Mastercard and its crypto-focused subsidiary BVNK have unveiled a new infrastructure that allows enterprises to hold, move and spend both fiat money and stablecoins from a single account interface.
A unified multi-currency account
The core of the offering is a "global money account" that aggregates conventional currencies and digital stablecoins side by side. Through one set of APIs, developers can embed functions such as sending, receiving, converting, storing, spending and earning into their own branded products. The modular design lets clients start with basic features and add more capabilities, such as stablecoin-linked cards or treasury management tools, as needed.
Integration with existing Mastercard services
The platform is linked to Mastercard Move, the company’s cross-border money-transfer network, enabling users to draw on stablecoin balances to fund local-currency payments that land directly in recipients’ bank accounts. Mastercard projects coverage of more than 40 currencies across over 200 nations by 2027, and card-based spending of stablecoins will be supported in more than 130 countries.
Early adopters and ecosystem partners
Payments processor Nuvei and card-issuing platform Marqeta are among the first firms to incorporate the system, alongside other fintechs such as Ontop, Beem and Almond FinTech. These partnerships demonstrate how the platform can be used to issue stablecoin-backed cards, provide real-time conversion, and facilitate payouts to local banks.
Outlook for programmable commerce
Mastercard’s executive vice president for blockchain and digital assets highlighted the importance of interoperability across different forms of money, positioning the platform as a foundation for “programmable and agentic commerce.” The company has already explored AI-driven payments with partners like Coinbase and Ripple, and holds a New York BitLicense that covers stablecoins and tokenized deposits. Future updates are expected to add support for tokenized deposits and autonomous agent transactions.
Why it matters
By merging its extensive payments network with BVNK’s stablecoin infrastructure, Mastercard is creating a bridge between traditional finance and the emerging digital-asset economy. The solution gives businesses a single point of entry to manage multiple money types, potentially accelerating adoption of stablecoins in everyday commerce and expanding the reach of programmable payment flows worldwide.
