Polygon Labs announced the completion of its acquisition of Coinme, a licensed crypto-exchange and cash-to-crypto platform. The transaction concludes agreements first revealed in January, which bundled the purchase of Coinme and wallet infrastructure provider Sequence for a combined value exceeding $250 million. Polygon’s chief executive highlighted the move as essential for transforming the company into a leading payments-focused blockchain entity.
Expanded regulatory footprint
Following the acquisition, Polygon’s U.S. payments arm now operates under 37 money-transmitter licences and 11 regulatory exemptions, extending its coverage to 48 states. In addition, the business is registered with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network as a money-services business, providing a formal framework for anti-money-laundering compliance. This regulatory depth gives the platform a clear, licensed pathway to convert fiat dollars into digital assets and back, a critical requirement for mainstream adoption.
Platform capabilities and early adopters
Coinme’s service suite enables users to purchase and sell digital assets via cash, debit cards, and bank transfers. At the time of the original announcement, the platform reported more than one million users and a retail network spanning roughly 50,000 locations across the United States. Early customers such as Tazapay, whose Open Money Stack offers businesses a direct route between stablecoins and local currency, have already begun leveraging the newly regulated infrastructure.
Strategic significance for Polygon
By integrating Coinme’s licensed exchange and extensive retail footprint, Polygon gains a ready-made conduit for stablecoin transactions that complies with U.S. financial regulations. This positions the network to capture a larger share of the burgeoning on-ramp and off-ramp market, where regulated fiat-crypto conversion remains a bottleneck. The acquisition also consolidates talent and technology from both firms, potentially accelerating product development and expanding the ecosystem of decentralized finance applications built on Polygon.
Why it matters
The completion of the Coinme acquisition marks a pivotal step toward a fully regulated, blockchain-based payments infrastructure in the United States. With a broad suite of licences and FINCEN registration, Polygon can now offer businesses and consumers a compliant bridge between dollars and stablecoins, reducing friction in everyday transactions. This development not only strengthens Polygon’s competitive position but also signals growing institutional confidence in the viability of regulated crypto payment solutions.
