Lido’s on-chain referendum numbered 214 received backing from token holders representing 58.2 million LDO, clearing the way for the protocol’s dual-governance system to go live on Ethereum. The change introduces a set of rules that allow participants holding stETH – the liquid-staking token issued by Lido – to intervene in certain governance proposals before they are executed.
How stETH Holders Gain Influence
Traditional DAO models grant voting rights solely to owners of the native governance token, in Lido’s case LDO. Because many users who have deposited ETH into Lido’s staking contracts receive stETH rather than LDO, their economic exposure does not translate into direct voting power. The new framework creates a secondary check: stETH holders can now lodge objections or request delays on specific actions, adding a layer of protection for assets locked in the protocol’s smart contracts.
Extension of the Emergency Delay
Alongside the governance overhaul, the vote also prolonged the emergency-governance delay period to 14 days. This longer window gives the community additional time to assess and respond to disputed changes, making it harder for contentious or potentially harmful updates to be pushed through without adequate scrutiny.
Implications for Protocol Security and Decentralization
By combining LDO voting with stETH-based oversight, Lido aims to narrow the gap between token holders and the users whose funds are at stake. While the dual-governance model does not eliminate all risks associated with token-centric decision-making, it reshapes the balance of power, ensuring that those who hold the economic asset – stETH – have a more tangible role in safeguarding the protocol’s integrity.
Why it matters
Lido’s primary offering is a liquid-staking solution for Ethereum, meaning that a substantial amount of staked ETH is managed by its smart contracts. Introducing a second governance pathway directly involving stETH holders strengthens the protocol’s defense against decisions that could misalign with user interests, potentially setting a precedent for other liquid-staking and DeFi projects seeking to align token economics with user capital.
