Five firms—Bullish, Equiniti, Alpaca, Apex Fintech Solutions and DriveWealth—announced the creation of the Issuer Sponsored Token Coalition. The group’s purpose is to craft standards that keep tokenized equities directly linked to the issuing company’s official shareholder ledger, thereby safeguarding rights such as voting, dividend entitlement and participation in corporate events.

Technical roadmap and market integration

Members plan to address several foundational areas: technical specifications for token creation, mechanisms for settlement and custody, and protocols that enable the movement of securities between legacy market systems and blockchain networks. Alpaca highlighted its Instant Tokenization Network as a tool for achieving interoperability, while Apex Fintech emphasized the need for standards that allow tokenized markets to connect seamlessly with existing broker-dealer infrastructure.

Regulatory backdrop and industry debate

The coalition’s launch follows a recent exemption from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that permits limited on-chain trading of U.S.-listed equities under defined conditions. The move arrives amid ongoing discussions about the distinction between synthetic products that merely track stock prices and true tokenized shares that confer legal ownership. A recent dispute involving AMC Entertainment’s chief executive and a major trading platform underscored the importance of clarifying these differences.

Leadership perspective

Tom Farley, chief executive of Bullish, stressed that establishing a robust architecture now is critical for the sector’s long-term credibility. Arush Sehgal, head of digital assets at Alpaca, added that correct implementation will protect shareholder rights while unlocking new connections between issuers and investors.

Why it matters

By aligning tokenized equities with official shareholder registries, the coalition seeks to bridge the gap between traditional finance and decentralized markets. Successful standards could provide investors with the benefits of blockchain—speed, transparency and broader access—without sacrificing the legal protections associated with conventional stock ownership. The initiative also signals a collaborative approach to regulatory compliance, potentially shaping future policy and encouraging wider adoption of digital securities.
