Coinbase announced that it is supplying the technology behind Citi’s Spring platform, allowing the bank’s institutional customers to both receive stablecoin payments and convert fiat deposits into stablecoins through automated virtual accounts.
Partnership overview
The collaboration builds on an earlier 2025 agreement in which Citi and Coinbase said they would develop institutional digital-asset payment solutions. The latest update defines two distinct pathways. First, Citi’s Spring service now incorporates Coinbase’s payment stack, giving corporate users a direct route to accept stablecoin transfers. Second, Citi’s Virtual Account Wallet, paired with Coinbase’s Virtual Accounts, provides a fiat-to-stablecoin conversion mechanism that operates automatically when funds arrive in a traditional currency wallet.
How the stablecoin payment stack functions
For clients using the Spring route, the transaction begins with a stablecoin transfer that is processed through Coinbase’s infrastructure before reaching the recipient’s account. The other flow starts with a conventional currency payment; Citi’s Virtual Account Wallet holds the fiat, and Coinbase’s system instantly swaps it for a supported stablecoin, depositing the digital asset into the client’s virtual account. The public announcement does not specify which fiat currencies or stablecoins are eligible, nor does it reveal pricing or volume metrics.
Implications for corporate banking
The integration signals a broader move by major financial institutions toward offering digital-asset services alongside traditional banking products. By providing both inbound stablecoin acceptance and seamless fiat conversion, Citi can cater to a wider range of corporate use cases, from cross-border settlements to payroll in digital currencies. However, the lack of disclosed client names, transaction counts, or total value transferred makes it difficult to gauge the immediate market impact.
Why it matters
Embedding stablecoin functionality into a mainstream banking platform could accelerate corporate adoption of digital assets, reduce reliance on legacy correspondent-bank networks, and open new revenue streams for both Citi and Coinbase. As more institutions explore similar capabilities, the partnership may serve as a blueprint for how legacy banks can leverage crypto-focused infrastructure to stay competitive in an evolving financial landscape.
