Ethena disclosed plans to broaden the asset base supporting its USDe synthetic dollar by incorporating tokenized U.S. equities supplied through Binance’s bStocks platform.

Expanding the backing model

Historically, USDe’s stability has relied on a delta-neutral structure that pairs a long position in a crypto asset with a short position in a related derivative. Ethena intends to apply the same principle to tokenized stocks, allowing the stablecoin to draw collateral from a new class of digital securities. Binance’s bStocks are digital representations of underlying U.S. shares held in regulated custody, and the protocol will treat these tokens as the spot leg of the hedge.

How the trade works

The strategy involves holding a tokenized equity while simultaneously taking an opposite position in an equity perpetual futures contract. By doing so, directional price moves in the spot token are largely offset by the futures position, leaving the spread between the two markets as the primary source of return. The approach does not aim to bet on the price direction of companies such as Apple or Nvidia; instead, it seeks to capture funding rates and basis differentials while keeping net exposure near zero.

Operational considerations

Introducing tokenized equities brings several new variables. Traditional U.S. equities trade only during defined market hours, whereas the tokenized versions and their futures trade continuously. This mismatch can affect liquidity, especially on weekends, and requires careful handling of corporate actions, custody documentation, and price feed reliability. Although Binance states that each bStock is backed one-to-one by the underlying security, holders do not receive direct ownership of the physical share, which adds a layer of legal nuance to the collateral arrangement.

Why it matters

The expansion signals a shift toward multi-asset collateralization for crypto-native stablecoins, offering diversification beyond purely digital assets. While the added exposure to tokenized stocks could enhance yield potential and resilience across market cycles, it also introduces equity-specific operational and regulatory risks that Ethena will need to manage. The development underscores the growing role of tokenized securities as functional components of decentralized finance infrastructure.
