BIX has announced a roadmap to broaden the geographic reach of its crypto-enabled Visa card. The firm targets adding roughly twenty more states, moving from the present 29-state footprint to coverage in 49 states within a six-to-eight-month window. The schedule remains contingent on obtaining the necessary permissions from financial partners and regulators.
Card mechanics and supported assets
The product combines a self-custody wallet with a traditional Visa payment instrument. Cardholders can load dollar-pegged stablecoins—specifically USDC or USDT—into the wallet and use the card for everyday purchases. When a transaction is processed, the merchant receives the usual fiat settlement through Visa’s network, meaning merchants do not need to handle cryptocurrency directly. BIX supports multiple blockchain networks, including Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Base, Solana and Optimism, to facilitate the stablecoin balances.
Compliance as the primary barrier
Unlike technical limitations, the reason the service is not yet nationwide lies in the regulatory landscape. Crypto-linked card programs must work with regulated banking, issuing and payment entities, each of which holds distinct licensing requirements that vary by state. Consequently, expanding the card’s availability is largely a matter of securing approvals from these partners rather than scaling the underlying technology.
Current offerings and future features
At present, BIX provides a free standard tier that grants eligible users access to virtual cards. The company is also developing physical cards and additional account capabilities, such as connections to ACH, SEPA and SWIFT networks. These enhancements remain in the pipeline and are not yet accessible to all users.
Why it matters
The push to expand a stablecoin-backed payment card underscores the growing convergence of decentralized finance and mainstream payment infrastructure. By allowing consumers to retain value in blockchain-based assets while merchants continue receiving traditional fiat, the model removes a key friction point for crypto adoption. Successful nationwide rollout would signal that regulatory pathways are becoming clearer for similar products, potentially accelerating the broader integration of stablecoins into everyday commerce.
