Binance has committed $100 million to acquire a minority stake in Circle and entered a five-year commercial agreement aimed at promoting USDC across its platform. The arrangement ties Binance’s growth directly to Circle’s performance, mirroring the existing distributor-shareholder relationship Circle maintains with Coinbase.
Rapid Growth of USDC on Binance
Since the initial collaboration was announced in late 2024, the number of USDC-denominated spot markets on Binance has risen sharply, climbing from 140 to 329 according to market data. Monthly trading volume in USDC on the exchange has also jumped, consistently exceeding $80 billion after previously hovering between $20 billion and $40 billion. Daily transaction flow now sits between $5 billion and $10 billion, a magnitude ten to twenty times larger than most other venues, which typically stay under $0.5 billion.
Impact on the Stablecoin Landscape
USDC’s market capitalisation sits near $74 billion, placing it as the second-largest dollar-pegged stablecoin behind Tether, whose USDT token commands roughly $140 billion. Analysts note that Binance’s expanded reach, especially in emerging economies, could give USDC a stronger foothold in regions where Tether has long been entrenched. However, Tether’s extensive local liquidity and entrenched user habits mean any shift in market share will likely be gradual.
Circle’s Broader Strategy
Beyond issuing stablecoins, Circle is constructing a payments network intended to link financial institutions for USDC-based settlements. The firm also announced a $400 million acquisition of Singapore-based fintech Tazapay, a move designed to add banking relationships and payment infrastructure in developing markets. These initiatives, together with the Binance partnership, aim to broaden USDC’s utility beyond simple trading.
Competitive Pressures Remain
While Binance’s involvement provides Circle with a powerful distribution channel, Tether continues to benefit from deep-rooted trading pairs and a well-established payment ecosystem. Observers caution that increased visibility alone will not instantly overturn Tether’s lead; user familiarity and local liquidity will keep USDT a formidable competitor for the foreseeable future.
Why it matters
The infusion of capital and the strategic alliance between Binance and Circle signal a concerted effort to accelerate USDC adoption worldwide. By leveraging Binance’s extensive user base and infrastructure, Circle is better positioned to challenge Tether’s dominance, especially in fast-growing markets. The outcome of this rivalry will shape the stability, accessibility, and regulatory scrutiny of dollar-pegged stablecoins in the coming years.
