Blockchain analytics firm Arkham identified two separate movements of cryptocurrency linked to U.S. government wallets on Tuesday. Approximately 833.599 BTC, valued at about $71.6 million at the time of transfer, was sent to two initially unknown addresses before being forwarded to deposit accounts operated by Coinbase Prime. In a parallel transaction, roughly 40,285 BNB—worth $31.6 million—was moved to an unlabeled address (0x7F68F63fB3A9CCCf352409603421E0A574FbAD90) and then to a second unknown destination (0x6fB3Fe7b7E78AbB84CE007cBC7412C850B15A579).

Source of the assets

The Bitcoin batch was composed of two distinct forfeiture streams. One portion, 568.7 BTC, stemmed from the Potapenko-Turogin case, while another 264.9 BTC originated from the Bitfinex hack seizure. The Binance-Coin transfer traced back to assets seized from Alameda Research, the former trading arm of the now-defunct FTX platform.

Government holdings and policy context

Even after these movements, the Treasury retains control of roughly $27.5 billion in cryptocurrency, accumulated from numerous enforcement actions. Under an executive order issued in March 2025, any Bitcoin confiscated by the government is to be retained in a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, meaning that a transfer to an exchange does not equate to a sale.

Potential market impact

Historically, large-scale transfers from government wallets have sparked speculation about impending liquidations, which can pressure prices. Analysts note that the recent activity appears to be a logistical step—likely positioning the assets for future custodial or auction processes—rather than an immediate market-selling event. As the coins were routed to Coinbase Prime, a platform used for institutional custody, the move may simply reflect routine asset management rather than a signal of market supply.

Why it matters

The transaction underscores the scale of assets the U.S. government has accumulated through crypto-related enforcement and highlights the procedural steps being taken to manage those holdings. While the transfer does not signal an imminent liquidation, the visibility of such large movements can influence trader sentiment and underscores the evolving intersection of regulatory actions and crypto market dynamics.
