U.S. Treasury markets have entered a period of heightened uncertainty, while Bitcoin traders remain relatively unruffled, according to recent options data.

Treasury volatility reaches March-level highs

The MOVE index, which tracks expected price swings in U.S. government bonds, climbed from the low-80s earlier in the week to roughly 104. This marks the strongest reading for the metric since the spring season. The surge follows a backdrop of persistent inflation worries, elevated energy costs, and unclear direction for monetary policy. The 10-year Treasury yield briefly brushed the 5.2% mark before easing, adding to the market’s nervousness.

Bitcoin’s volatility stays subdued

In contrast, the 30-day Bitcoin implied volatility index (BVIV) has been lingering near 37 points, barely above the low of about 35 recorded this year. The broader equity market’s VIX, which measures expected S&P 500 volatility, is also sitting at roughly 14, another low-end figure for the year. This divergence shows that participants in the crypto options market are not demanding the same level of protection that bond traders are.

Limited spillover from bonds to crypto so far

Historically, a rapid tightening of financial conditions can transmit risk to assets like Bitcoin, which often experiences larger price swings than traditional safe-haven instruments. However, the current data suggest that the link between Treasury volatility and crypto market turbulence has weakened, with recent correlation estimates turning negative or approaching zero. While the bond market’s stress could eventually influence crypto, the options pricing today does not reflect an imminent surge in Bitcoin’s price swings.

Why it matters

The split in volatility expectations highlights a rare scenario where the traditionally safest corner of finance shows more anxiety than the historically volatile digital asset. Investors should note that the calm in Bitcoin’s options market does not imply a shift to safety; rather, it reflects a temporary disconnect between macro-level bond market pressures and crypto risk pricing. Should Treasury market tensions intensify, the crypto space could still experience heightened volatility.

Why it matters

Understanding the current divergence helps market participants gauge where risk premiums are being priced and anticipate potential contagion effects if bond market stress deepens.
