The Crypto Council for Innovation and the Blockchain Association have teamed up with the Digital Chamber and other allies to press for a quicker judicial review of Illinois’s planned digital-asset levy. In a filing submitted to the Circuit Court of Sangamon County on Tuesday, the coalition asked the judge to approve an accelerated schedule for summary judgment, aiming to obtain a ruling on the tax’s legality as soon as possible. The filing references the lawsuits already filed by CCI and BA against state officials, as well as a separate case brought by the Digital Chamber and the Illinois Blockchain Association.

Legal push for expedited ruling

The coalition argues that while a temporary pause shields Illinois businesses and consumers from the levy until mid-2027, a prompt decision on the substance of the law is essential. CCI’s chief executive emphasized that the pause does not remove the need to settle the matter quickly. If the court grants the requested timetable, a judgment on the merits could be issued by March.

Tax implementation delay

Earlier this month, state officials agreed to postpone the enactment of the 0.2% cryptocurrency tax from January 1 to July 1, 2027. The delay emerged from the Digital Chamber’s lawsuit, which contended that the provision had been inserted into the budget without adequate debate or public comment. The Digital Chamber’s chief said the organization will continue its legal fight until the tax is overturned.

Leadership transition at Blockchain Association

Separately, the Blockchain Association announced a change at its helm. Summer Mersinger is set to step down as chief executive on Friday as part of a planned leadership transition. Mersinger, who joined the group after leaving the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, is expected to remain involved through the end of 2026. Kristin Smith, the association’s former chief executive, will assume the interim role pending a permanent replacement.

Why it matters

The outcome of the Illinois tax case could set a precedent for how states treat digital-asset transactions, influencing future regulatory approaches nationwide. Simultaneously, the leadership shift at a major crypto advocacy group may affect its policy direction and engagement with regulators in the coming months.
