Binance has launched a new peer-to-peer merchant referral scheme that will run for a month, beginning on October 8 and ending on November 7. The promotion covers about twenty markets in Africa, including Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and several West and Central African nations. Participants who successfully introduce a new merchant can each earn 50 USDT, provided the merchant meets specific activity thresholds.

Qualification criteria

The reward is not granted for simply sharing a link. To qualify, a newly referred merchant must execute at least ten trades with ten distinct counterparties and achieve cumulative trading volume of at least 10,000 USDT (or equivalent) within thirty days of signing up. Binance will release the payments only after these conditions are verified. Each referrer is limited to a set number of successful introductions, ensuring the program targets quality over quantity.

Why Binance is targeting merchants

Peer-to-peer trading fills a critical gap in regions where traditional banking channels are costly, restricted, or unreliable. By connecting local fiat to stablecoins such as USDT, P2P platforms enable users to bypass expensive cross-border transfers. Expanding the pool of vetted merchants improves the likelihood that users will find a counterparty with compatible payment methods, tighter spreads and sufficient liquidity.

The $50 incentive represents a modest acquisition cost for a merchant capable of generating recurring local volume. More verified merchants also strengthen Binance’s overall ecosystem, as a robust merchant network can enhance the attractiveness of its broader spot and stablecoin services.

Compliance and operational considerations

While P2P markets offer flexibility, they also pose heightened risks of fraud, payment disputes and regulatory scrutiny. Binance requires merchants to undergo identity verification and may impose additional onboarding steps to mitigate these concerns. The referral campaign maintains these safeguards, aiming to grow the merchant base without compromising compliance standards.

Potential impact on African crypto adoption

Africa has emerged as a strong region for P2P crypto activity, driven by limited access to conventional financial infrastructure. By incentivising merchant onboarding, Binance hopes to solidify its position in the market, offering users more reliable avenues to acquire and liquidate digital assets. If successful, the program could lead to deeper liquidity, narrower price gaps and broader acceptance of crypto as a bridge to global finance.

Why it matters

The initiative underscores Binance’s belief that peer-to-peer trading remains a strategic pillar, even as regulated spot exchanges and stablecoin payment solutions expand worldwide. By directly rewarding the supply side of its P2P marketplace, Binance aims to improve user experience, drive volume growth and reinforce its foothold in a region where alternative payment routes are essential.
